Valentine’s Day Ideas

Valentine’s day can be fun and exciting for some and dreaded by others. I think it’s a day that can be spent with a special person you love or your family. My fondest memory is when my mom and dad came to my college apartment with heart candles and my dad made a heart shaped cake. My family’s tradition was always Valentine’s breakfast tea party. My mom would set the table beautifully and organize everything to have a red/ pink theme. (She was very lucky to have four girls).

Next to the teacups and china dishes was always a little valentine present. Sometimes it was heart socks and other times cosmetics. We never were a big chocolate and flower family. I love the idea of giving something meaningful on Valentine’s Day.

Below are some ideas for anyone that is special in their life.

Chocolate covered strawberries, a must for someone with a sweet tooth. These are so easy to make and delicious.

Closet Makeover Part II

James did such a wonderful job. He cut the hole and added a lovely trim around it which matched the previous old door frames.

He then added a crisp white color to the frame and painted the surrounding wall a deeper blue to serve as an accent wall. One dark wall will draw your eye back and the room will seem deeper.

The inside was left to the bare dry wall because after I leave the apartment he will strip down the other walls. It is a nice clean sheet though so it still looks tidy. This space will house the washer and dryer.

This wall is where the curtain rod will be along with the clothing shelves.

As you can see from the mirror reflection the clothing is a bit crowded and in other post I will do the organization of that.

Cleaning makeup brushes

2015/01/img_5760.png

Who thinks about their makeup brushed like paint brushes? I would never put away a paint or watercolor brush full of paint. So why haven’t I been cleaning my makeup brushes? I guess I didn’t know how easy it was.

Simple steps to clean brushes:

1. Add baby shampoo to lukewarm water. Have two bowls, one with the soapy water and one with clean water.

2. Swirl your brush around in the water and then rinse it in the clean bowl

3. How beautiful is this blush color! After each brush the water was so dirty that I constantly had to refill in the bowl with new clean soapy water.

4. Place the clean brushes on a dry cloth. My table is at a slight pitch so the water flowed downward. However I’m sure a flat drying table would be fine.

Let them dry and voila! Your skin will thank you. No more makeup clogged brushes!

Project Life: College Years Part 1

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

A big goal of mine over break was to finally organize the thousands of photos I had in my iPhoto library (over 30,000). When I was 16 I purchased a Nikon d40 and from then on my photo collection exploded. Now with the iPhoto, it is so easy to fill your phone with over 1,000 photos in a month.

What do we do with all these photos? Some get posted to my instagram but the majority sit on my computer was no use. Hard copies of photos is so important because who knows what will happen to technology is 30 years.

Then my mom introduced me to Project Life! The most wonderful way to organize photos in a simple scrapbook. The basic premise to clear dividers. I used the 6×8 album that offers a variety of protector layouts.Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with hb2 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with hb2 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with hb2 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Simple Steps to start a Project Life Book

1. Print your pictures- I made the mistake of printing all my photos at Walmart and assumed I could cut them down to 3×4 to fit the vertical slots. This was a big mistake. You can print your landscape photos because those are 4×6, however I would recommend printing from persnickety prints for the 3×4. It will save you so much time and you’ll have a better end result. For best photo quality I would recommend matte finish.

Persnicky wrapped the photos beautifully.

2.  Get an album- Michaels has a Simple Stories one that it not expensive and comes with lots of protectors. Studio Calico and Becky Higgins also have albums.

3. Start organizing– Start by placing photos and photo cards, embellishment, memorabilia.. whatever you have in the house. They have kits online and at Michaels you can buy.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is overwhelmed with their photo collection. Start one month at a time and your album will be beautiful.

Migraine relief

2015/01/img_5762.jpg

Some mornings I wake up with horrible pains around my head and feeling disoriented and nauseous. For anyone who suffers migraines know how debilitating they can be.
When this happens I reach for the ice packs in the freezer. The gel eye mask is wonderful and you can strap it anywhere on your head.
Even if you just have a headache putting something cold on your head and laying under the covers will pull the blood from your head and give you some relief.

Make sure you lay somewhere dark and comfortable, try and sleep. I also spray peppermint oil which is said to help with headaches.

Face Mapping

Some people suffer from breakouts more than others. I am a firm believer that our life is reflected in our body. Face mapping is a way to verify what’s going on inside your body, since every part of your body is linked to different organs

Chinese medicine states that all organs have a different color, temperature, and taste, and are manifested in a certain way. Skin on your face is an expression of your health.

“The body is made up of a bunch of systems—lympathic, neurological, digestive, to name a few—and all of these systems are tied together,” stated Dr. Hsu “It’s very difficult to affect one without affecting others.”

A common theme among all these areas is to make sure you are drinking enough water. This helps to flush the body of toxins and waste.

Zones:

1. Above the Brows

According to Chinese medicine, the area above your brows is linked to your gallbladder and liver. Try eating less processed or junk food and reduce the amount of fat in your diet.

2. Between the Brows

Hsu says that breakouts between your brows mean you’re drinking or smoking too much, or eating too many rich foods. “Incorporate more exercise into your routine, and get more sleep.”

3. Nose

Your nose, not surprisingly, is connected to your lungs and heart. Hsu recommends cutting back on spicy foods, meat, and salt and replacing them with fruits, veggies, nuts (full of good fats like omega-3 and 6). If you’re getting constant breakouts on your nose, check your blood pressure and vitamin B levels—Hsu says that upping your vitamin B intake can help combat flare-ups.

4. Left Cheek

“Chinese medicine is really big on left and right,” Hsu tells us. If you’re breaking out on the left side of your face, he recommends eating  “cooling foods”—think winter melon, cucumber, and the like. The left cheek is more connected to your liver, which Hsu says is the weakest between one to five p.m. in the afternoon. “If you’re having a breakout on your left cheek, try to avoid any strenuous work during that time of day,” he says.

5. Right Cheek

Hsu says the right side cheek is more connected to your lungs. He recommends doing aerobic and breathing exercises early in the morning to strengthen your lungs. The right cheek is also more sugar-focused. “If you’re breaking out on your right cheek, I would recommend cutting back on junk food and sugar, as well as wine, taro, and seafood,” Hsu says.

6. Mouth Area

If you suffer from breakouts around your mouth area, once again, your diet could be to blame. The area around your mouth is associated with your digestive organs, like your intestines and liver. Hsu recommends cutting back on spicy foods and fried foods, while eating more fiber, fruits, and veggies.

7. Chin

“Modern acupuncturists would say that if you break out around your chin, you should get your hormone levels checked,” Hsu says. “Stress can also be a huge part of it.” He recommends drinking spearmint tea and taking omega-3 to soothe these breakouts, as well as talking to your gynecologist about your hormone levels.

Dry Air Remedies

The old house I rent from is particularly dry. Here are three things I use to help.

1. Humidifier

DSC_0002

I normally run it at night when I sleep. However when it’s really dry it’s nice to run it during the day on a lower setting.

2. Hand lotion and lip balm

DSC_0005

This hand balm is amazing and locally made in Wilson, NY. I would highly recommend it. The consistency is more oily than other lotions because it does not contain alcohol (as a drying factor) so it’s best to put it on when you won’t be touching anything. Right before bed or if you are watching TV.

The burt’s bees lip balm is also great to put on at bedtime because then you don’t have to worry about it during the day or coming off when you have a drink.

3. Keep your plants watered

Enough said with this one.

What I use most: Peppermint oil

Spiders I would not say is a big fear of mine, but I guess it was never an issue. The apartment house I rent from is over 100 years old and seems to be a spider’s favorite place. The solution of having a clean tidy home doesn’t seem to be enough. Although there has only been 6 or 7 that I have seen since I moved in here almost two years ago. They were large enough to leave a lasting impression.

The solution: Peppermint oil spray. I already had peppermint oil and so after purchasing a spray bottle I added several drops to water. Then I went crazy and sprayed everywhere. I considering heavy chemicals to ensure no unwanted appearance, but I didn’t feel it was right to poison my air too.

Curtains seem to be their favorite spot to hang out. and now my apartment smells like a candy cane

What I use most: Laundry Basket

This duvet cover is from Jessica but I love it for fall. I have two down comforters. Even though putting on the duvet cover is a little tricky, I love how easy is it to make a bed.

20141113-121523.jpg
I love washing sheets and towels, they feel so good to get into and are easiest to fold.

20141113-121333.jpg
The bin under my bed has wheels so it easily hold all my extra sheets.

20141113-121434.jpg
I love this square laundry basket because it fits neatly most places and is the right size for a full load of laundry. I have two laundry basket. One for towels and sheets and the other is for clothes.

My favorite this week

What I enjoyed most this week.

Home is such a nice place to be. My mom is so wonderful and always loves to teach me new things. This weekend I learned the “proper” way to iron a shirt.

1. Bear ears

DSC_0006

(because Halloween was easy, little bear ears and a fuzzy vest for school)

2. Ralphie

DSC_0011

(the sweetest dog in the word, who follows me around the house)

3. These glasses

DSC_0008

(for giving Tom and his eyes a nice relief from contacts everyday)

4. Halloween decorations

(my mom always has great style taste, especially when it comes to her favorite season)

5. This light
